It is still the "UNION OF MAN & MUSIC"........ isn't it...?? Tektile Records (formerly known as The Tektile Movement) is still very much alive and rocking. Our party sets may have change since you last saw us. Its started with Techno from Detroit to S'pore with Mel wrecking the synth and workstations. Then there was Aloysious with his mystical soundscapes, who rocked the dancefloors of the former CENTRO. Then, there was Sher breakbeat-ing the floors of Phuture. Not forgetting the NuJazz outfit of Mel, Azman Nirwan, Lance, Marc Anthony and myself.

Soon, you'll see the 'live' outfit...... again. Nothing much have change, we're still impressing people with our abilities of playing impromptu pieces. COCKY u say.... heheh.... yea. Cocky and stuck-up and full of ourselves.......

I'm slowly beginning to understand why we, in Singapore are becoming idiots, ignorant and clueless about what's good or not, what's real or rumour, or even, what's quality and insanity. IQ levels are slowly dropping, intelligence is a joke and 'crappy-shit' is the new cool.

Why would a country who is becoming a leading techno-hub, edu-hub, and all the rubba-hub-hub...... have TV shows like S-Factor? I would like to mention few others but lets just minimize the insults. Is it really necessary to capitalize on breasts, boobs and ugly tatoos? Are the TV stations selling it to men ONLY? and......lesbos? If men starts disrespecting women by ogling, caressing, molesting, invading modesty....... do you remember who ignited it in the first place? Is this suppose to help with the government's exercise to promote and improve love, sex and familyhood .......... or pervertism? Do they know that making-out is far better than watching those girls play with snakes and mud and cream puffs. At least, making out will take longer than the whole TV show.

There would many who beg to differ with my opinions (whateva la.....). Citing other TV shows as an excuse... e.g. Live & Loaded. Personally, I think it is commendable that they are giving opportunities and path to local talents. But again, if you go all the trouble to listen, evaluate and anticipate these bands, why can't they do a lil' more........ more money and attention to these bands. For one, the recording sound SUCKs. Of course its 'live'....... but shouldn't they put a REAL sound engineer for these guys. Those who have played in the studio in Mediacorp would know. They have an auntie as the monitor engineer (sound). I mean a REAL auntie!! If you're really supporting the local talents, do it whole-heartedly. Oh! and btw, have they actually seen or been in a mosh-pit, or how body-surf is done?

Recently, I went to an anniversary event of a radio station. It use to be my fav station where I actually took some trouble to contribute. Unfortunately, it changed its focus and vision to fit somebody's pocket. One thing I couldn't understand is, what does stand-up comic got to do with real-good music. It must have been a joke which I didn't understand.

Apart from that anniversary event, which was attended by free-loaders, who were fighting over free french-fries and sotong balls, there was another event which I attended, which confuses me. This time, it was a fashion event.

It was actually a welfare event for the designer who just graduated. Someone was kind enough to look for sponsors, provide venue and spent money to provide avenues for the designer-hopeful. That was very noble but what confuses me was ........

1. The designs were for club-goers. Unfortunately, it looks like costumes for Halloween, or something from the wardrobe of the Addams Family. However, the talents who were modelling the designs did a great job at showing how 'versatile' the costumes were. It showed that a girl can do splits, walk like an Egyptian and tip-toe, in case they're partying in a club with those outfit. Maybe, it is suitable for club-wear during Halloween week. I'm confused.

2. Throughout the event, they had only music from Britney Spears. According to the designer, he/she gets inspiration from Britney Spears. Ok listen up, mitch! I didn't see any Britney in the designs, coz she don't wear Halloween costumes to go clubbing.... not even on Halloween. Another thing is...... how can anyone take you seriously if you're playing Britney Spears throughout the event. Look up in the internet...... do you know what genre of music is Britney Spears?? No, its not POP......... its called 'bubblegum music'. How is anyone gonna take you seriously??!!

I was told that a respected local DJ came to lend a helping hand and wanted to play for the event. Not for the designer but for the venue. He was shrugged off because the designer told him that "ITS A REAL FASHION SHOW!" (Less did they know that he DJ played at GUCCI fashion show in 1999, LV fashion show in India 2007 and Mercedez fashion week 2007)

More confusion after that..... the designer can't pronounce Louie Vuitton properly and thinks that pork is from pig, and ham is from hamster......... I'm sure he/she thinks 'ceasar salad' was invented by Julius Ceasar. Maybe he/she doesn't even know Julius Ceasar.... or Brutus?? How about BUTO??

Can't blame them........ but who to blame for all these confusions. Maybe its just me, with the corrupted mind.

Earth Hour

Suddenly everyone is concern about the earth. Suddenly everyone wants to be part of the "Earth Hour". Suddenly, everyone realised how important or what changes can be made to save the earth. Suddenly, some people contradict themselves from their actions. Suddenly, they find that switching of their lights is just plain stupid.

Of all the sudden reactions, some lame asshole thinks that 60 EARTH HOUR is a movie premiering tomorrow night at 8.30pm (showing for only 1 hour...??!!). I wonder what kind of bubble he lives in. Worst is, he's a colleague. Damn it!! Such people work for us??!! Oh.... I forgot..... they become managers coz they are either good bartenders or loyal to 'someone'....... but none can actually manage.

If you're wondering whether I'm gonna switch off my lights or not......... NAH!! can't be bothered. I have good reasons not to do so.......

1. I'm afraid of the dark
2. My electrical bills are fixed regardless of whether I use or not.
3. Lazy to get up to switch off the lights, then get up again and switch ON.
4. I only like darkness if I'm with someone........ in bed.
5. My room is haunted.
6. Is it ok if I turn the lights ON but switch the aircon OFF....??
7. Its bad for your eyesight reading in the dark.
8. Someone else is switching the lights OFF on behalf of myself.
9. Do I get tax rebate if I switch OFF the lights?
10.Can't switch OFF the lights..... we're busy doing crap events!!

Oh I forgot...... anyway, I'm gonna be out at the beach. What freakin' earth hour are you talking abt....??!! No need to switch OFF the lights to save the earth. Just remember this.........

CARLSBERG & DBL O DELIVER THE GOODS

This Month's Highest Recommendation is Dbl O's "The Tektile Movement Records", an 8 track compilation named for the record label it represents. Sponsored by Carlsberg. The Tektile Movement Records (Singapore) is the Asian Branch of an American based music label that comprises of an assembly of DJs and Musicians that expounds Nu-Jazz, a very unusual fusion form that generates soundscapes yet retaining a melodic paradigm. I was rather taken off guard by my foray into the CD's contents - encountering down-tempo that transcended the funk-house cookie-cutter. The first track, "Emotion of The Ocean" by Xtac was a haunting electronica piece with inspiring string lines. It had a deep 'vogue' feel that painted a horizon of scattered beats in a somewhat eternal builder. Despite my lack of coffee and antibiotics, I was inclined to feel hopeful, with the composition burying itself into the subconscious. A second piece, "The Kokyu Curse" by Mel certainly hexed me into addiction with its undulating bass and an innovative kintaro-esque flute/sax patch that carried a new age aroma to the breakbeat. This was creative use of analogue distortion that subtly rode the wings of the synth lines for texture. I was surprised to find local Trance King Yukun's track "An Evening Serenade"....this was certainly a departure from his usual euphoric trance repertoire with a dated synth-pop feel to it. No crescendo of soaring synths here. Instead, I found a delightful breakdown that had great velocity variation between samples and a mesmerizing groove.

Mel's Lansing Solitude was another interesting number witha bossa/salsa vibe, housey yet atmospheric with wide pans. Do also check out Razaq's "Who Shook My Whore?!" (Mel Remix) a dynamic trance composition with 'Hybrid' sensibility (Remember "Unfinished Symphony") that was entertainingly littered with thick percussion. Xtac's "Beyond the Horizon" proved to be my favourite, with its uplifting synth currents and sawtooth edits. Overall the production level was satisfying with crisp mastering. This collection might prove to be ideal chill out material on that odd sunny day at KM8 or in one of those Balcony baskets.

Dbl O is six years old this year, with the re-launch party on 3rd November aptly named Metamorphosis, it is set to become a thorn in the side of other clubs around town. The Tektile Movement, is a new and vibrant record label which is directed towards the upcoming sounds of local artistes and producers who thrive on electronic music and technology. They have produced, remixed and mastered eight tracks that create a musical journey of ambient, downtempo, NuJazz, breaks and trance. YOU'RE KIDDING ME, RIGHT?

Singapore has emerged second for nightlife and dining in the second annual Country Brand Index 2006. Singapore was unranked in the previous survey but it now beats countries such as the United States, UK and Thailand.

The Country Brand Index is developed by FutureBrand, a global brand consultancy, in conjunction with the public relations firm Weber Shandwick's Global Travel Practice. Global Travel Practice is a global study of more than 1,500 international travellers, travel industry experts and hospitality professionals and it examines how countries can be branded and ranked according to key criteria.

My question is... who in blue hell are the "1,500 travellers" that gave the Singapore nightlife the thumbs up when 80% of the "clubs" here continue to cater to bad mainstream / commercial music tastes? How can our nightlife be more vibrant than those in Europe? Hell, even our seedy scene is nothing compared to that in Amsterdam. You're telling me that versus cities that "never sleep" like Germany, Japan and Hong Kong, we came up tops when clubs here empty out generally after 3am and cabs still go into hiding before the midnight charge kicks in. Food and dining, we kinda rock, that we admit. But what nightlife where they exactly referring to? The Mandai Zoo Night Safari, I presume?

Nothing is funnier than to hear a Singapore chinese boy proclaiming that he so digs where Tupac is coming from when he has never gone through the ghetto poverty, struggles and racism and oppression. What cracks me up is to hear the current generation of youngster referring to their "significant" other as "my boo". People, act your goddamn colour! Unless you belong to the elite American black-boys' club, stop trying to dress "hip hop" and speaking in "thug lingo". You look like a bloody yellow banana trying to be black.

So in a country where the authorities "advise" Slayer to tone down their "satanic persona" during their recent concert here, we're actually rulin'? So we are finally hip now? If you say so. The rest of us know better. Not that it's THAT a boring island... just that I can easily name TEN other cities that definitely have more "exciting" nightlife than dear old SingaBore.

Seriously, when "live" entertainment here means a cheesy foreign band doing cover versions and crappy choreography... that scored high in the survey? Just because some Filipino band can sing in Cantonese, that's supposed to be groundbreaking? Forgive me, really... what were the "key criterias" that were examined?

Herbie Hancock's Future 2 Future 'Rockit' Live

Luke just lent me the DVD release for this 'live' session. Refreshingly interesting version by Herbie Hancock with DJ Disk on turntables & the ever so cool Terri Lyne Carrington on drums who's also a Yamaha endorsee.
Other musicians include Wallace Roney on trumpet, Darrel Diaz on keyboards.

If you notice, Herbs uses a Korg Karma (K.A.R.M.A technology kicked arse btw back then) tho' I'm a pro-motif user. Bought it from my buddy Azman anyhow.

If Herbie can change with time, so can my mum who still can't sms decently for nuts. If only I can grab a copy of SMS-ing for dummies.

Btw, I remember 3 yrs ago when Herbert & I weren't acquainted with Razak yet. Herbert was @ the PALA show and he watched Razak do a showcase on the turns & CDJs at the Denon booth. Razak was scratching & Herbert was in awe. STEEP!! Must have been the hardhouse you were into back then herbz.

It's been a long while since I've last seen my students who graduated 6 months ago. It's funny how ppls' roads converge and diverge in different circumstances.
Well, these were the top 5 of the 132 students I had in April 2006, and I know they've gone on to do great things.
From absolute beginners to hustlers hahaha...

Lester Young's disastrous stint in the army, Thelonious Monk's inability to communicate with anyone but his wife, Bud Powell's mental breakdown, Chet Baker's drug-induced deterioration, Duke Ellington's endless travels.
Dyer also addressed the oppression of working within an atmosphere of race-alienation, a hardship that led many to abuse alcohol and drugs, and find solace only in their incredible music.
In the end, 'But Beautiful' is a splendid meditation on jazz and the personalities that created it, couched in a prose as lyrical, and as rigorous; as the music it describes. Read it & Enjoy!

Urm...Minus Count Basie... But his namesake orchestra does him proud. Basie's my all time Bebop star btw.
Highlight includes; Melanie, a folk pop singer; Her rendition of "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma," is blardy killer. Gospel like, n well devised. Goose bump factor def.
Errrr...however other than that, collaborating after death is def. a gimmick.

I remember the time when you wrote the 'Enka' styled piece of score for the mini-orchestra for your summer project. When the viola section started playing, we were like 'what the hell is this'? But we didn't realise it sounded that good. I admit now; It's good.
I think that's how Tom Cruise got his inspiration to act in 'The Last Samurai'. The only ang moh to think he's an asian.

Posh Club Opening - Boy Wonder in KL?

Natsumi Akazaki Band (Red)

Razak's post does bring light into the already dimly lit scenario. ;) Had a very busy weekend with the arrival of 16 year old Natsumi & her two counterparts Kenta & Hideaki. The guys are 20. Natsumi plays the organ while Kenta & Hideaki on the violin & guitar respectively. Decent Fusion.. Very darn decent for a 16 year old, considering what they play are all originals. Reminds me of a Mark & Spencer over a Razak track. LOL

Had photos taken with Natsumi & the band. However, the sentence on her Tee is so wrong...

The Label's Anniversary Dinner is on the 28th and we'll be announcing our direction for the new year. hurhur...Razak will do all that.
We're gonna do monthly dinner sessions where we'll bring our laptops together to exchange ideas, swap loops & samples and discuss production techniques. I believe Yukun & Case wouldn't mind joining for a session or two.

We're gonna let u guys in on a secret.... however, its nothing concrete yet.

Come Dec, there's gonna be a new club by the river along Robertson Walk. Its small but the vibe is good. Currently, I'm still negotiating with the owners with regards to the music concepts and stuffs. It looks good coz they are very keen in having 'live' electronic music as its main entertainment. That means, all u guys out there who's dying to show off yout gadgets and production knowledge, we've got a place for u......

However, the main music genre for most of the nights will be House (funky, soulful/latin and electro)... no prizes for guessing who's the resident jock... we've got a monthly guest list for our local jocks to come and tear up the dancefloor... however, I haven't confirm any... I'm still thinking of Yukun, Benjamin, Sebastian, Sher, djMing and few other guys who're still stuck in the bedroom.

If any of you jocks out there interested, do drop me a mail..... btw, no Hip Hop, Reggeaton or RnB, please.....!! there are other places for those stuffs.

On a different page, I heard Tektile's 'live' crew has been offered a spot at a new club/bar at Dempsey....?? strictly NuJazz.....? damn!!! awesome....!! things looking bright, eh?

Planning For Lucify's Concert (Nov 25)

Too bad I ain't working in the chinese music industry (very lucrative indeed), tho' I just turned down an asst managerial position in one of the big record labels, cos my mandarin sucks to the core. Thanks to non-existent mandarin classes in the states. Will def. be a laughing stock.

Confirmed Lucify's concert with The Emerald Hill Group already which will fall on Nov 24, Saturday 6.30pm - 8.30pm @ dbl O. Thus, if you're a J-Rock fan, you'll probably like their style. Lucify's schedule is pretty packed; fresh from the 'Superband' competition. They're performing @ the Indoor Stadium again on the 24th Oct, following a Japanese Embassy Event, after which a charity event alongside acts like Energy & Milk. Life is looking good for these boys.
In the midst of deciding which venue for their probable cd launch in 2007. Either Babyface / St James'.

After reading Razak's post, I also agree we should have a band. However, upon that, I also realise that we all don't have the time, which is the most essential factor.

Maybe I'll start teaching my students how to play electronic music instead of pop/classical.

Luke's already started playing @ St James' Powerstation with the Puzzle Band led by Sky, Slyvester Sim, William Scorpion & Celeste on rotation while friends Tommy, Wayne & Patrick glam it up as the Queen Band. The official grand opening of it's first outlet 'Dragonfly' is on Oct 3rd from 7-11pm, tho' it's already open with the soft launch last Sunday. Super long performance sets from 7pm till 5am. Fortunately, there are two bands, thus thay play alternate sets. Imagine having to play 6 sets, 1 hr each. PURE TORTURE! Plus, a ridiculous amount of Hennessy/Martell downed within that time span.

can't help but thinking about the pix..... so beautiful yet insulting, yet intriquing, yet ...... not yet! sometimes, its like music..... the more we tried being creative, the more it sucks!! just listen to Oakie's new album. It sucks!! (sorry Oakie's fans)..... maybe sticking to basics will help....

and.... whats with people adoring profanities in hip hop....? MTV promoting foul-mouthed rappers....? what about artistes such as Groove Junkies, Lenny Fontana, Audiowhores, King Unique..... they have songs talking about 'the right direction'......

I know what.....!!!!! MTV is run by the devil.....!!!! and he listens to hip hop!!!!

maybe we should go back being homosapiens, animals..... we don't have to worry about all this, about why reggaeton is so bloody un-creative......

need my medicine now.....

Lee Ritenour - Overtime

Had a listen after recommendations from a colleague of mine, Leandro.

Relatively some straightahead numbers filled with soulful and creative playing. Basically Lee Ritenour sounds very much like Wes Montgomery on songs like 'Blue in green'. In spite of co-arranging it with one of my favourite jazz greats, Dave Grusin (Piano), the album sways away from the norm.

Vocal numbers are much more in the r&b/smooth vein and are largely throwaways despite the presence of Ivan Lins.
This album will probably only satisfy his greatest fans, as jazz listeners would def. be turned off by the vocals but pop/smooth fans will only tolerate his more adventurous originals.

For me...3 1/2 Outta 5
